Narrenturm – Pathologisch Anatomische Sammlung ist eine Empfehlung im kuratierten Guide des Almanac Palais Vienna.
Der Narrenturm am Areal des Alten AKH ist ein ebenso eigenwilliges wie aufschlussreiches Stück Wiener Aufklärung: 1784 als erste psychiatrische Klinik Kontinentaleuropas errichtet, wird der Rundbau nicht umsonst „Kaiser Josephs Gugelhupf“ genannt. Heute führt die pathologisch-anatomische Sammlung – als Teil des Naturhistorischen Museums – mit präziser, sachlicher Inszenierung durch die Geschichte von Medizin, Körperbildern und Fürsorge im späten 18. Jahrhundert. Ein Besuch ist nichts für flüchtige Eindrücke, sondern für neugierige Blicke hinter die Kulissen einer Stadt, die Wissenschaft stets als Teil ihrer Kultur verstanden hat.
This museum is in a lunatic asylum is very graphic and very interesting! Apparently, they did autopsies on every person and preserved the specimens of all of the oddities from more than 100 years ago, kept in a basement through WW2; rickets, smallpox, leprosy, cancerous tumors, conjoined twins etc. No photography permitted. 8 euro ticket price.
As it is not possible to take pictures inside of the museum, there's a pic of a digitalis nearby. The museum has a really big collection of model of moulding parts of the human body, illustrating all the diseases that can be catched.
Not for the squeamish! A grim but fascinating look into medical history. It’s the kind of place that really makes you appreciate your own health. Highly recommended for those who can stomach it.
